Trim Natural Hair

“The time has come to lay that baggage down and leave behind all the struggling and striving. You can be set free as you journey forward into a balanced healthy and rewarding future.”

― Sue Augustine, When Your Past Is Hurting Your Present

This also applies  to hair.

You have to get to a time where/when you have to leave behind the split ends, damaged, won’t curl hair. That  hair has to go!!! You need a trim. I am not saying to big chop ( cut a big chunk of hair, but some of us might need to just big chop and start afresh….but hey!not everything is for everyone)

So why do we need a trim? One is that that the ends of out hair are damaged ( read the post:Hair not growing! this is why) so apart from bad ends making the hair not grow, there are others like your hair  lacking shape and movement, breaking,  noticeable split ends, frizzy, the list goes on.

But there is a solution, there is always a solution to every problem.

To solve this all you need is just sharp scissors.

Let’s take the case that you have just removed you protective style, you have detangled ( please be careful in detangling, remember your hair is weak) and have decided to get rid of the damaged hair.  What I personally do is two strand twist my hair then cut of that part that seems so thin.Hair-Trim

Another methode, that experts recommend, is to blow out your hair using minimum heat so that you are able to see the damages then cut.  hqdefault

There is really no science to trimming, just look where the damage is and cut! and watch what difference it will make. Yes the length might seem short but healthy will always beat length any day.

@businessandmommyhood

Benefits of a trim: healthier ends, less breakage: getting rid of the split ends will cause a reduction in hair breakage,

Retain length : getting a trim will help you retain length due to the reduction in hair breakage and split ends. When you have split ends and don’t take care of them, the split travels up the hair shaft and stunts hair growth

Easier Styling :detangling is much easier when your hair is even and can reduce the amount of time and stress in your detangling process

Thicker/Fuller Look – If you don’t get a trim, the split ends will start to taper off and your hair will look thinner

If you need a trim please, trim. Be it in relationships, or hair. No need for excess luggage. In the end  the weight sucks your happiness and your health. Let’s aim for quality relationships, friendships and hair rather than quantity.

Healthy over Lengthy.

P.S    I would like to appreciate  my friend Lydia so much. We have been through a lot together these past 12 years! ( OH MYYYY 12 YEARS!!!!!) She gives me courage to continue. Thank You Lydia. Tout mon amour.

Hair not growing! This is why

Many seem to point out that their hair does not grow, or at least doesn’t seem to grow. But that is far from the truth. your hair grows, you just don’t retain length.  On average, your hair grows to about 4 inches per year that’s according to a study done by a respectable journal. This is not to mean everyone’s hair grows at the same rate, no, it means that some have a fast growth rate, others average and yet others a slow growth rate.

How long your hair is is determined by your length retention. Please note that length retention and growth rate are completely different. Length retention is based on your regimen and how well you care for your hair. Trimming your hair does not increase it’s growth rate, but it helps in length retention. What trimming does is that it cuts away the damaged ends so you are left with the healthy parts. This same concept, I think everyone has noticed it in real life, a bad tomato once not removed from the basket tends to spoil the rest of the good tomatoes. So  here is how damaged ends tend to look like:

IMG_5656c20130612-190244

The split ends tend to grow in length, the weaker the hair gets the more breakage you have meaning  you see it left in your comb, so the best thing to do is cut them. If you think your hair is not growing, ask yourself when was the last time you had a trim.

Reason two of why your hair is not growing: over manipulation. This means that your  hair is never in a protective style. Protective style means your ends are protected, hidden and well taken care of. This is by guessing that you already know that your ends are the weakest part of your hair.  So by doing a hairstyle like braids, flat twist, weaves, two strand twists, bun or chignon, etc all these are protective styles. Please remember that those braids that are too tight only help in edges going missing. As we saw  in the previous post type 4 hair is the weakest, please put that in consideration and be gentle in how you handle it.

Reason three. Bad eating habits. You can not be unhealthy, and have good healthy hair. A healthy lifestyle translates into everything. Drinking water, exercising, eating right all contribute to  your over-roll being and is seen through your hair. I personally think there is no bad food, it just the quantity and the frequency that matters.

Reason four. No moisturizer. Natural African hair tends to get very dry, once dry it’s more prone to breakage. So the best thing to do is moisturize. This means using shampoos and conditioners. Please note that certain shampoos contain harmful chemicals that could be harmful to your hair. ( Maybe soon we will cover something on that)

Reason five. Heat. How in the world are you going to sit down for an hour or more to burn your hair, in an attempt to make it straight, every week and expect that hair to be healthy. When it comes to heat, less is healthy. There are many ways you can stretch your hair without using heat. But I’m also not saying once in a while you shouldn’t blow-out your hair. It’s good to flaunt the length and the volume.

Reason six. what are you doing to help it grow?

Please tell me if this is helpful information. So that i can go on or stop. Have a good week ahead.

Hair typing.

In my last post  I talked about my hair being type 4C. I got a lot of questions about that. what is type 4C? How do you choose which type you are? Well my answer is that you do not choose what type you are, it is determined by your genes. And hair has a ”science ‘of its own, there is more to hair than meets the eye: texture, porosity, colour, curl, fine, heavy .etc. our genetic ancestry influence all that, for example, Asians are associated with black straight hair, Scandinavians have red or blond fine hair while Africans have black, tightly curled hair.

So lets get right to it.  The best way to  see your true curl pattern is after you have washed your hair and it has aired dried without product in it. Since its a lengthy process and there are people out there who have done the science like Andre Walker who has  created a broad- spectrum hair typing system that classifies various hair textures into 4 types and each type with its sub-categories.  There is straight hair, wavy hair, curly hair and kinky hair. then there are sub- categories.

The straight hair is type 1, type 1 has, like all other types, 3 sub- categories, A B and C  so we get something like 1A, 1B and 1C ( HEEEEE!!!! THERE GOES THE USAGE OF MATHEMATICS IN REAL LIFE :0 )  This type of hair is curl resistant, ( think Chinese hair), then we have the different 2A,2B,2C,3A,3B,3C and we reach where I wanted to get to Type 4 hair. The KINKY hair!

Type 4 is the kinkiest, coarsest and driest of all hair types. Just as we saw, the curl patten is has many twists and turns so it is hard for water to traverse, which explains the dryness and luck of moisture. This type tends to shrink which makes it hard to determine its actual length.

Let me give examples on the different, have you ever watched or see or peeped at naptural85, yep her hair is 4A.

Naptural85_060512_01

If your hair looks like that then you are 4A.

4B is where some people are but don’t know there are there because it is harder to diffirentiate between 4B and 4C. So to tell less lies, I will just give examples

Then 4C which is the rest I guess.

Below is the Andre Walker hair typing system chart.

Hope I have helped. If you have more questions please send them to me and will try as much as to answer them.

Detangling

Detangling is a word used in the natural hair community meaning to comb out the kinks out of the hair. There is a way Type 4C hair gets matted that one needs to take it slow, care in combing it out. Equipments needed: wide-tooth comb, mirror, water, conditioner, distraction, patience and hands. This must be done in a careful manner ( that is if the individual really cares about their edges)  This past week I undid my protective style of braids. And since in school we had a shortage of water…( third world countries problems) I had to wait until I had sufficient water to wash my hair. But the wait got too much and there was no light at the end of the tunnel that there was going to be running water any-time soon so I fetched water in a bucket and washed it. Mind you my hair had been in a PS for 4 weeks. Have you ever gotten complements for things you did not put effort into and makes you feel guilty? I did feel guilty!

My guilt got the best of me and I sat down and detangled the hair. While sitting there wincing at how painful it was, how much hair was falling off, I thought of so many things (my hate for cats, what caused the first world war, what if I just cut of this hair, how many people would be screaming at me, Who is Chrysostom? should I do my assignment? ……many things go through my mind at any given moment its scary) and one of them was principles.

Principles are those things that holds you as a person, differentiates you from the next individual….but that is my definition, the English dictionary says: a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behaviour or for a chain of reasoning.
what are your principles? what are your fundamental beliefs or behaviour?
In the daily life of this human being I call me, I was able to learn new truths about myself, or lets just say reconfirmation of certain truths. One is that I am frank, open, honest, and direct in speech or writing, especially when dealing with unpalatable matters.   I have for a long time known that but this week i was able to deal with it, and see myself from another point of view. With synonyms such as: plain, straight, straightforward, explicit, unequivocal, candid, direct, etc I noted that was being more straight forward than candid.

To get to where I want to reach with this topic for today, what I want to say is that just as when detangling hair one needs a list of things, one to define who they are what they stand for, what are their principles we all need those things.

One, we need a mirror, a mirror in this case is an honest friend, to tell you like it is without pretence or fear.
Two, we need conditioner, the restoring, the hope that things can get better. Conditioner restores the hair, gives it shine, repairs damages, etc. That is belief in a better tomorrow.
Three, we need hands: we need to do the work ourselves, our parents will not, our friends will not, as much as your pastor is a loving person and very mentoring he/she will not do the work for you. It is a personal journey.
Four, we need a wide-tooth comb, one can not enclose themselves away from everything and everyone and expect to learn or develop anything new. In this case what I mean is exposure, experience, information, people….
Five, we all need patience. Rome was not built in a day.Look at the great men and women that we consider our heroes and role models ( Nelson Mandela, Wangari Maathai, Martin Luther King Jr., Billy Graham, Margaret Thatcher, Steve Jobs, Maya Angelou, etc) they are all share an element of age. Look at the age at which they were finally famed? Take your time in working on your foundation. Patience is a virtue.
Six, we all need water. Water is life. John 14: 6. Jesus is the way, the truth and life. Get connect to Jesus.

P.s : thank you for reading, and your comments and suggestion, which I appreciate very much are being worked on. Next post will cover relationships and my take.As one of you asked. Keep it right here for that and send in what you would like me to write about.
Love,Jo

Climbing Mount Kenya with one shoe

My school this semester organised an excursion to Mount Kenya.
As an FYI, Mount Kenya is the highest Mountain in Kenya with the highest peak being Batian which stands at 5,199 meters. Being the second highest mountain in Africa, being just 2.5-3 hours away from Nairobi,I think it was about time to make a few memories and landmarks. I was talking to this teacher, he is a Reverend, and we were talking about paper money and how he collects from different countries, he has 242 different paper money and about 340 coin money. He stopped and told me, I’m telling you this so you can be jealous, so that you will want it for your self or even better, so that when we meet one day in the future you will tell me ‘I have also been to 56 countries’For him so far he has been to 13 African countries and in total 55 countries.

As the story goes, we were to go there animal sighting, not the hike or climbing, but as bad planning goes, we left school at 6:30 instead of 5:30 as anticipated. We stopped in Karatina town for tea break and continued the journey , buy the time were were getting to the gates it was 12:30 PM.

DSCF0844 The rains started just when we were to begin the walk, do we stop or do were go ahead?

DSCF0855

A little rain never hurt no body! Natural hair representing!!! No need to get cover or hide, water is good for you 😉

DSCF0872

This tree must have seen harsh days, reminds me of a hunted house.

DSCF0881

This is my favorite tree of them all. See the way it is twisted? Awesome!

DSCF0884

This is as far as we could go considering the time and the unpreparedness to climb all the way. I was informed that to get all the way, one needs for days.

DSCF0903

There have been constructing a road,to facilitate rescues, this is how it looks so far. It is very slippery.

DSCF0910

When i say muddy, slippery and a lady who was not ready for a hike, this are the results, my shoes got stuck in mud, lifted my leg and the sole of the shoe come off. I had to walk all the way with one shoe. 20 PLUS KILOMETERS WITH ONE SHOE! All the stones, the mud, the slips, everything.

DSCF0918

The sock fought a good fight, served me well.

DSCF0919

And that ladies and gentlemen is how my first Mount Kenya Climb went. If you can climb barefoot is we should trade notes.

See you on the next unplanned event.
