Doomed Future of Music

We are doomed musically. Save your old cassettes, CDs and the few memories that you have of old music because it is downhill from here. download

I am working for 20 marks on this topic: Is old music better than todays? Or better put does nostalgia of not paying bills, scheduled nap time, washed well-pressed clothes and family trips paid by parents, etc make us consider the music we used to listen to then more beautiful than the new.

My simple answer would have been: music of today many of the lyrics have no real depth to them anymore either. Lots of mainstream artists don’t even write their own. The music is repetitive, and the lyrics sometimes involve swearing or the typical thought that every song has to be about love. Many of the lyrics have no real depth to them anymore either. Lots of mainstream artists don’t even write their own, etc.

But that would not be worth 20 marks would it?

Music is one manifestation of the human’s incessant need to communicate with his fellows, it expresses the inner states of one individual to another or that of a group to another group. While it is being performed, performer and listener share in this expression of feelings. We usually attempt to define what we call music in terms of the way it is manifested in our own particular culture.

I have a musical friend who shocked me by saying that our generation does not have bass singers. Apparently, it is hard to find a man who can sing bass, the most he can do is the tenor.  He even goes ahead and says that the bass can be removed from the notes and no one will notice. The days spent listening to Il Divo seem more blissful.

Think about how a particular mood is enhanced when we add music. When we feel good the music can make it feel even better. When we feel bad, the music can help to pull us into another frame of mind. At times the wrong music can even make the mood worse, sadder, more morose. Sometimes the sound of it, particularly when it’s not what we want to hear, can drive us almost mad. In any case, we can all accept that it has a powerful effect on us at times.

We cannot speak about our change of music without our change of communication, if we agree that music is one way we communicate as humans, then something must have changed. Some say it is the change or the assimilation of different cultures. Today, we have forces that seem to be working toward a globalization of musical tastes. Iif we look across cultures and even looking within any one, there still exist a great diversity of forms, styles, and traditions of music. Change has always been a factor in culture, but today, with the increasing effectiveness of media and communication, the world is saturated with cultural information and it is rare to find human societies that are even relatively untouched by it. Change brought about by contact between groups is part of the process by which culture evolves, adapts and accommodates

I  am not a declinist. Neither are my friends. But very much nostalgic. Because nostalgic experiences rarely reoccur, we are motivated to savor them by prolonging the time we reminisce about them.

My conclusion to answer all this change of music will be tied to who were are as individuals. Music has not changed, our way of communication has changed, we as people have changed. We chose not to listen to the songs we used to listen to. We want to be trendy by ditching what we loved just to fit in. It won’t hurt to listen to Beyonce’s Survivor if you don’t like the new…..mmmmhhh…… what’s her latest song called? (Someone update me) it is still out there.

We are second-hand people. We have lived on what we have been told, either guided by our inclinations, our tendencies, or compelled to accept by circumstances and environment. We are the result of all kinds of influences, and there is nothing new in us, nothing that we have discovered for ourselves: nothing original, pristine, clear. Jiddu Krishnamurti

Growing deeper roots

Nothing is holier, nothing is more exemplary than a beautiful, strong tree. When a tree is cut down and reveals its naked death-wound to the sun, one can read its whole history in the luminous, inscribed disk of its trunk: in the rings of its years, its scars, all the struggle, all the suffering, all the sickness, all the happiness and prosperity stand truly written, the narrow years and the luxurious years, the attacks withstood, the storms endured.

We have all heard that a tree is as strong as how deep its roots are.

It has rained 5 times, as far as I could count. In Kenya we have been experiencing drought in some places. The heat since December last year up to date has been heart wrenching. In my campus the results of the lack of water is evident. The once beautiful green scenery is now brown and dusty.

But in all that chaos, there are trees that are blooming. A beautiful sight to behold. These trees seem to bloom at the weirdest times. As  I  have come to learn, they are:Bonfire Patio Peach,African tulip tree,Pink Poui….etc . What makes them leave beyond the current situation. Answer: how deep their roots are. As much as this is true it is also important to note that  tree roots follow the oxygen-rich macropores, whether they are in deep or shallow soils. The volume of this soil type determines above else how large the trees will grow.

So in that long story, or short. I wanted to say that i am growing my roots, looking for a rich soil.

I am working on a project of looking for mentors for former street children who are now in different children’s home. This not only helps the children but also helps those who want to give back but don’t know how to.

If you would like to volunteer your time in impacting these young minds ,contact me.

And as a leader is one who reads. Been reading on how the likes of Joanna Lipper and Erin Bernhardt have been able to produce and direct such heart touching stories. In my growing deep. I want to explore the art of humanitarian documentary.  It is where i feel my heart is. And youknow what they say about home and heart. #homeiswheretheheartis

When we are stricken and cannot bear our lives any longer, then a tree has something to say to us: Be still! Be still! Look at me! Life is not easy, life is not difficult. Those are childish thoughts. Let God speak within you, and your thoughts will grow silent. You are anxious because your path leads away from mother and home. But every step and every day lead you back again to the mother. Home is neither here nor there. Home is within you, or home is nowhere at all.― Hermann Hesse, Bäume. Betrachtungen und Gedichte

So tell me, how are you growing deep. Let’s talk

2017 : new year new me syndrome

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

It’s 2017, TWO THOUSAND AND SEVENTEEN!!!!!

It’s a new year, and we are here today.

What have we done to be here? is it because we are the bravest? the strongest? the healthiest ? the smartest? The love of God is amazing isn’t it? His immense love and mercy has brought us this far, even though we are not the best nor the most beautiful. He is omniscient and omnipresent,  so I believe he has a reason for us being here.

Lamentations 3: 22 and 23 contain some precious promises. Here we learn that God’s mercies and compassion do not fail; they are “new every morning”. Such being the case, we can start each day with the humble, confident assurance that whatever the day may bring, God will be near to help. In the book of Psalms, we find that the writer was in the habit of starting the day with God. We read “Morning by morning, O Lord, You hear my voice; morning by morning I lay my requests before You and wait in expectation” (Psalm 5:3 NIV).

So, my new year started at in a very unique way.:) ( Ask me about it, I might tell you)

And I felt, like many, that NEW YEAR NEW ME……This disease is contagious as much as we  deny it.

We normally hear the usual, “I’m going to start eating healthier and going to the gym more,” line when you ask someone what their New Year’s Resolution is. That’s an awesome goal to have, but if you’re going to be a “new person” this year, there are a lot more important things that you’re going to need to focus on. It’s much more important to start on things that are inside of you.So I come up with my own thing that you can do this few months when you are going through deciding on new year new me theme. Please not that this is in addition to your resolutions.

  1. 1d07f10360a346fb439e71b54019f710Know your personality type.
  2. Focus more on your strengths and personal improvement everday.
  3. Read about emotional intelligence
  4. 31fdfbd57fc955dfc6efd67041142391Do something you’ve never done before. Spend on something worthwhile ( definitely not shoes….think long term here) or should I say” invest”
  5. Leave the whats App, Facebook and other social media groups that you don’t understand the purpose or know only one person. If britain left who are you not to leave groups that don’t benefit you? click-on-exit-in-whatsapp-web
  6. Clean your mail box
  7. Drink more water. It is January and the sun out there is hot hot hot, buy a water bottle, curry water wherever you go.
  8.  Have snacks, healthy snacks.
  9. Learn to say NO

It’s easy to say no when your priorities are in order

This is chart is helpful especially to those of us who fall into the pessimistic group.

And just know that, no matter what you decide to accomplish in the next 360 days to the end of this year,…..

0df872650f30d235b7c43846ca2eda3a you can do it. Go for it.

Something is in the water: Kendrick Lamar

“It gets even deeper than that for me. I could be talking all day about it.”

Kendrick Lamar, this guy is my new obsession. Instead of studying for my coming exams. I am here, listening to his songs. Especially the song King Kunta. I think Mr. Lamar is a poet, that nigger can say things that make you think. Or not.

“It gets even deeper than that for me. I could be talking all day about it.”

So as any poet, there is always these behind the story, behind the words, behind the person, behind the tone, forward literal meaning, nothing is as as it should be. Maybe it’s because you were reading a certain book or anything. So it seems many want to say, Kendrick wrote the song after seeing or reading about Kunta Kinta. So I went ahead and googled Kunta Kinta.

Kunta is is a character in the novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family by  Alex Haley.

Haley_roots

So the story goes: One day some guy named Kunta was minding his own business searching for wood, then all of a sudden some men  who don’t respect other people’s hustle start chasing him. Kunta was taken captive and him and others were put on a slave ship.  So the ship sealed and sealed  all the way to North America. Kunta Keeps on minding his business and grinding ( we all know what happened to slaves……could write about it but who I’m i to say) So Kunta being a slave was suppose to be given a name, which they gave him,Toby, but as stubborn as he was rejected the name and stuck on his name and refused to talk to all those other slaves. As a man who was disturbed from wood picking, Kunta tries many times to escape. Four times! So four times was enough they gave him a choice between two: castration or cut off his right foot. He chose his foot ( well duh!) The one foot Kunta after many years, come to terms with reality that the firewood will never get to his mother in time and he resigned himself to his fate. So, Kunta got married and had a daughter Kizzy. Kizzy was sold to some other guys in North Carolina. One day, many years later she comes back home, only to find her dad had died and her mother was resold to another plantation. She goes to his grave, on the tomb was written Toby, she rubs that and writes his original name, Kunta Kinta.( Restore your fathers’honor people!) so the novel goes on and on to the generation of Alex Haley, the writer.

So, what I am trying to say, is an abstract art sometimes needs the original thinker to explain. When Kendrick mentions:

When you got the yams
The yam is the power that be
You can smell it when I’m walking down the street
He could mean the real Yams, or using the slang for cocaine, women and all those things that makes a man fall. Or simply like a friend of mine did, he painted in his head a picture of people sitting on the edge of the grand canyon, such a nice view right? then he inserted that the couple sitting on that hood of the car talking, the slow wind breezing by were eating maize. Mahindi Choma! So, it can be that simple maybe, Kendrick just missed yams. Life can be that simple.

So back to Kendrick I would like to share a few things that makes you think from his songs:

Have you ever opened up Exodus 14?
A humble man is all that we ever need
Tell me how much a dollar cost.- How Much a Dollar Cost

I remembered you was conflicted

Misusing your influence, sometimes I did the same                                                                     Abusing my power full of resentment                                                                                           Resentment that turned into a deep depression                                                                          Found myself screamin’ in the hotel room                                                                                             I didn’t wanna self destruct, the evils of Lucy was all around me                                                     So I went runnin’ for answers_ Alright

Would you say my intelligence now is great relief?

“It gets even deeper than that for me. I could be talking all day about it.”

Hair typing.

In my last post  I talked about my hair being type 4C. I got a lot of questions about that. what is type 4C? How do you choose which type you are? Well my answer is that you do not choose what type you are, it is determined by your genes. And hair has a ”science ‘of its own, there is more to hair than meets the eye: texture, porosity, colour, curl, fine, heavy .etc. our genetic ancestry influence all that, for example, Asians are associated with black straight hair, Scandinavians have red or blond fine hair while Africans have black, tightly curled hair.

So lets get right to it.  The best way to  see your true curl pattern is after you have washed your hair and it has aired dried without product in it. Since its a lengthy process and there are people out there who have done the science like Andre Walker who has  created a broad- spectrum hair typing system that classifies various hair textures into 4 types and each type with its sub-categories.  There is straight hair, wavy hair, curly hair and kinky hair. then there are sub- categories.

The straight hair is type 1, type 1 has, like all other types, 3 sub- categories, A B and C  so we get something like 1A, 1B and 1C ( HEEEEE!!!! THERE GOES THE USAGE OF MATHEMATICS IN REAL LIFE :0 )  This type of hair is curl resistant, ( think Chinese hair), then we have the different 2A,2B,2C,3A,3B,3C and we reach where I wanted to get to Type 4 hair. The KINKY hair!

Type 4 is the kinkiest, coarsest and driest of all hair types. Just as we saw, the curl patten is has many twists and turns so it is hard for water to traverse, which explains the dryness and luck of moisture. This type tends to shrink which makes it hard to determine its actual length.

Let me give examples on the different, have you ever watched or see or peeped at naptural85, yep her hair is 4A.

If your hair looks like that then you are 4A.

4B is where some people are but don’t know there are there because it is harder to diffirentiate between 4B and 4C. So to tell less lies, I will just give examples

Then 4C which is the rest I guess.

Below is the Andre Walker hair typing system chart.

Hope I have helped. If you have more questions please send them to me and will try as much as to answer them.
