Born To Serve

Here is an article written by my friend Cyd, about a friend that inspires me.

Read on and have a meaningful week ahead.

best for aticle

A year ago, as I sought training in the field of communication, life brought one Joseph Murimi Nyambura along my path and I must admit, you don’t come by many people like him on a daily basis. A man who in my opinion is not only zealous to serve but also a selfless character. Mr. Murimi is the founder of ‘Save a Life’- a community based organisation founded to make the world a better place for the forgotten in society; street children. I had a sit- down with him to get to know more on the organisation and
what they do

Give us a brief background about yourself.

I am a husband and a father of two beautiful daughters. I trained in photography and video production. I have worked in main stream media before embarking on working with the society. Currently I work at Pan Africa Christian University and the Director of Save a
life organisation.
What drove you towards this initiative?

I do believe in three things in life: serving God, family and society. A fulfilled life to me is one where I have impacted in other people’s lives as one is remembered for their deeds not by what they own.

When I was working in the mainstream media back in 2011, I met this needy child at Mathari slum who had a fracture on her arm and she needed a surgery to be fixed. She needed Ksh.200,000 which the family was unable to raise since the mother was a single parent with 2 children to look after and earning less than two dollars a day. This challenged me and I came up with the solution of fundraising for the girl and this is how I started a TV programme designed to fundraise for the sick
who cannot raise their medical bill. After producing the documentary, we managed to get money for her medical bil.l Since then, the program is still running having helped over 400 patients (https://youtu.be/P_-Zm7VklTM).(https://youtu.be/P_-Zm7VklTM).

Having come from Githurai, where unemployment, school drop- out due to poverty and where drug-peddling is rampant, decided to start training the youth in the impoverished informal settlement in photography and video production. I have seen several success stories of people who took it as a career and are now videographers. Currently, we have partnered with different organisations who will train diverse courses at Githurai. Due to single parenting and the drug menace, street family is a real social issue. I also started walking with them. As ‘ Save a Life’ ,we feed the street children as we engage them in addressing issues pertaining STDs, family planning and drug abuse and offer regular check- ups. We also take those who are willing back to school.

We have also managed to take several street children back to their families. We are committed to help many realise why they were created through counselling and mentorship programmes in order to be responsible people in the society.

What are some of projects the Save a life organisation has organised?

We have feeding program and an educational program that focuses on issues family planning, drugs and sexuality which aims to bring the children in the streets together and to not only empower them but to also create awareness on issues that affect them. We are also working on a training program that aims to equip the youth with the skills that will enable them to get to change their lives for the better economically and we have partnered with renowned school like Divine School Kenya to reach more people in the society like they always say.. “Give a man a fish…”

What is the future for the Save a Life foundation?

We look forward to partnering with like- minded people and organisations to make the dream of helping those who life has robbed
them the dream of having a better life come true. They are our children and it is our obligation to ensure that we are there to hold their hands.

New Waves New Tides

HELLO WORLD!!!!

I know it has been a while since you’ve heard from me.  I’ve been thinking about you, wanting for such a long time to reach out.  I just haven’t been quite sure until now, what I was going to say.
You see, I have been somewhat under the radar, having what I often describe cocooning
There has been so much that has been changing for me personally and professionally on a very deep level these past two-three months.  The shifts I’ve been experiencing are amazing and won’t trade them for anything. The new responsibilities have or rather are teaching me to re position and elevate my thoughts, ideas and everything else; this level of transformation takes on new immediacy and layers of meaning when it happens to you.
The truth is that I have felt like I have been trekking through the desert these past months, navigating shifting sands, going through an intensive period of introspection, consolidation, expansion and growth.

Whether you are a loyal or long term reader be sure of more information and consistency. As for my personal life/ life’s challenges, the major unexpected changes I have been going through, at last, make sense.

In the meanwhile, I just wanted to remind you how much it means to me that we are connected and I am just so excited for you to get to know more about natural hair, how to take care of it, and the healthy over length journey and over all growing and being steward of God’s gifts and talents.

As we move into this Month ( BIRTHDAY MONTH!!! ) August 6th. My message and wish for you is Joel 2: 23,25,26 and 27:

2So be happy, people of Zion.
Be joyful in the Lord your God.
He is good and will give you rain.
He will send the early rains and the late rains as before.
25 “I, the Lord, sent my army against you.
The swarming locusts and the hopping locusts
and the destroying locusts and the cutting locusts[a] ate everything you had.
But I will pay you back
    for those years of trouble.
26 Then you will have plenty to eat.
    You will be full.
You will praise the name of the Lord your God.
He has done wonderful things for you.
My people will never again be ashamed.
27 You will know that I am with Israel.
You will know that I am the Lord your God.
    There is no other God.
My people will never be ashamed again.”

What is it that you give in a relationships ?

Once I said I was going to talk about relationships but all over a sudden i got the heat for hair things and entirely forgot. Sorry to those who waited for it and were disappointed. I am working on it though so that  I can have a separate section for natural hair and another for such topics as this. Please bare with me as  i organize myself.

So my take on relationships.

“It is up to each person to recognize his or her true preferences.”
Isabel Briggs Myers
One of my friends’sister is getting married soon. I have never been so excited about two people getting married like these two. Why, you may ask. One is that, this couple is probably one in a million, or billion. The guy has had a crush on the girl since class five. 18++ years later they are getting married. The long and short of this story is that they give me hope for a proper relationship not the one that is presented to us in the media. There is work in a relationship, there is family involved in a relationship. You cannot give what you don’t have. If you don’t know who you are. What you stand for. What are your boundaries. How far are you willing to go. If you cannot be intentional or what it means to be intentional. I believe these things are important,if you can’t answer any of them, what are you offering? A body????
I  can say there is a lot  involved for it to come to be, sustenance and growth. Have you ever looked at something and it’s just there, where it was a year ago, no progress. I hate such friendships, you always have to walk on tip toes with such people, on eggshells all the time, you can’t  be frank with them ( I have a thing for frankness) you can’t be honest because they will stop talking to you. Such friendships suck big time y’all! I take the same take on relationships,  if we ain’t moving mountains lets just crumble this whole thing.

‘ if love can be chemically induced does it matter if the lovers will do the dry cleaning anyways? the point The Effect ( A singaporean theatre production) makes is that there is a difference between infatuation and love. The former can be kindled by volatile chemicals made to react under controlled situations, but love requires steady hard work unfazed by personal catastrophe.’

– Akshita Nanda

Relationships is about something bigger, than just momentary, monetary pleasures. It is about love. It’s about growth.

I am an ENFP( one of the sixteen types of personality.) meaning i don’t like monotonous things. I prefer to focus externally, the world around me,  I prioritize people and emotions. I am curious to know what makes people tick. So, intellectual curiosity is very important to me. This is to mean that, relationships require a conversation. A relationship is a between two people, if you cannot hold a conversation going for more than one hour what are you doing. Which brings me to the next thing I think people of my age should consider, long term.

A relationship is long term. You select this human being and decide to upgrade them on the higher scale of friendship by adding romance. This human being will affect you, change you, influence you, understand you, be there for you, hold you down. If it’s a two days thing then it’s not a relationship. And won’t it be nice to invest in something that will make us happy for such a long time. I mean have pity on your heart and brain. Introducing each month or year to your heart a new human being and ending up broken is hard.

So may take really is, relationships is a lot  of work, but when you enjoy what you are doing time passes by so fast. So select that one human being who makes life fun and upgrade him/her from the friendship level to the romance level. Remember what they say: are you equally yorked?

Trim Natural Hair

“The time has come to lay that baggage down and leave behind all the struggling and striving. You can be set free as you journey forward into a balanced healthy and rewarding future.”

― Sue Augustine, When Your Past Is Hurting Your Present

This also applies  to hair.

You have to get to a time where/when you have to leave behind the split ends, damaged, won’t curl hair. That  hair has to go!!! You need a trim. I am not saying to big chop ( cut a big chunk of hair, but some of us might need to just big chop and start afresh….but hey!not everything is for everyone)

So why do we need a trim? One is that that the ends of out hair are damaged ( read the post:Hair not growing! this is why) so apart from bad ends making the hair not grow, there are others like your hair  lacking shape and movement, breaking,  noticeable split ends, frizzy, the list goes on.

But there is a solution, there is always a solution to every problem.

9c1f68d262aff1153b8716f3011683da

To solve this all you need is just sharp scissors.

Let’s take the case that you have just removed you protective style, you have detangled ( please be careful in detangling, remember your hair is weak) and have decided to get rid of the damaged hair.  What I personally do is two strand twist my hair then cut of that part that seems so thin.Hair-Trim

Another methode, that experts recommend, is to blow out your hair using minimum heat so that you are able to see the damages then cut.  hqdefault

There is really no science to trimming, just look where the damage is and cut! and watch what difference it will make. Yes the length might seem short but healthy will always beat length any day.

@businessandmommyhood

Benefits of a trim: healthier ends, less breakage: getting rid of the split ends will cause a reduction in hair breakage,

Retain length : getting a trim will help you retain length due to the reduction in hair breakage and split ends. When you have split ends and don’t take care of them, the split travels up the hair shaft and stunts hair growth

Easier Styling :detangling is much easier when your hair is even and can reduce the amount of time and stress in your detangling process

Thicker/Fuller Look – If you don’t get a trim, the split ends will start to taper off and your hair will look thinner

If you need a trim please, trim. Be it in relationships, or hair. No need for excess luggage. In the end  the weight sucks your happiness and your health. Let’s aim for quality relationships, friendships and hair rather than quantity.

Healthy over Lengthy.

P.S    I would like to appreciate  my friend Lydia so much. We have been through a lot together these past 12 years! ( OH MYYYY 12 YEARS!!!!!) She gives me courage to continue. Thank You Lydia. Tout mon amour.

Hair not growing! This is why

Many seem to point out that their hair does not grow, or at least doesn’t seem to grow. But that is far from the truth. your hair grows, you just don’t retain length.  On average, your hair grows to about 4 inches per year that’s according to a study done by a respectable journal. This is not to mean everyone’s hair grows at the same rate, no, it means that some have a fast growth rate, others average and yet others a slow growth rate.

950c64d7f110b9c6b75967ecd5528b76

How long your hair is is determined by your length retention. Please note that length retention and growth rate are completely different. Length retention is based on your regimen and how well you care for your hair. Trimming your hair does not increase it’s growth rate, but it helps in length retention. What trimming does is that it cuts away the damaged ends so you are left with the healthy parts. This same concept, I think everyone has noticed it in real life, a bad tomato once not removed from the basket tends to spoil the rest of the good tomatoes. So  here is how damaged ends tend to look like:

IMG_5656c20130612-190244

The split ends tend to grow in length, the weaker the hair gets the more breakage you have meaning  you see it left in your comb, so the best thing to do is cut them. If you think your hair is not growing, ask yourself when was the last time you had a trim.

Reason two of why your hair is not growing: over manipulation. This means that your  hair is never in a protective style. Protective style means your ends are protected, hidden and well taken care of. This is by guessing that you already know that your ends are the weakest part of your hair.  So by doing a hairstyle like braids, flat twist, weaves, two strand twists, bun or chignon, etc all these are protective styles. Please remember that those braids that are too tight only help in edges going missing. As we saw  in the previous post type 4 hair is the weakest, please put that in consideration and be gentle in how you handle it.

Reason three. Bad eating habits. You can not be unhealthy, and have good healthy hair. A healthy lifestyle translates into everything. Drinking water, exercising, eating right all contribute to  your over-roll being and is seen through your hair. I personally think there is no bad food, it just the quantity and the frequency that matters.

Reason four. No moisturizer. Natural African hair tends to get very dry, once dry it’s more prone to breakage. So the best thing to do is moisturize. This means using shampoos and conditioners. Please note that certain shampoos contain harmful chemicals that could be harmful to your hair. ( Maybe soon we will cover something on that)

Reason five. Heat. How in the world are you going to sit down for an hour or more to burn your hair, in an attempt to make it straight, every week and expect that hair to be healthy. When it comes to heat, less is healthy. There are many ways you can stretch your hair without using heat. But I’m also not saying once in a while you shouldn’t blow-out your hair. It’s good to flaunt the length and the volume.

Reason six. what are you doing to help it grow?

Please tell me if this is helpful information. So that i can go on or stop. Have a good week ahead.
